Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Organise for waste water disposal
   • Obtain waste transport and disposal approvals and obtain and review job sheet to clearly identify all waste disposal requirements
   • Lock and seal all inlets, outlets and hatches to waste water storage facility to prevent contamination of waste water
   • Check waste water to be disposed to sewer to ensure it meets all sewer acceptance criteria and take samples for testing and analysis in accordance with disposal requirements and regulations
   • Confirm compliance with current trade waste certificate/permit conditions
   • Select and fit emergency and personal protective equipment in accordance with work requirements, manufacturers' specifications, company requirements and relevant legislation
   • Identify potential risks and hazards to job requirements and manage in accordance with company requirements, OHS and other relevant legislation
   • Contact relevant authority and confirm that discharge is received
2. Dispose of waste water to sewer
   • Open waste water outlet to allow efficient disposal of waste water to sewer
   • Attach flowmeter to record volume discharged
   • Check trade waste diversion during operation to ensure satisfactory operating condition in accordance with company requirements and relevant legislation
   • Monitor sewer discharge of waste water to ensure smooth flow, and regulate/divert flow to alleviate system backlogs in accordance with company and environmental requirements
   • Shut off valve and lock up system at completion of disposal activities, in accordance with company requirements, to ensure that there is no unauthorised leakage of waste water to sewer
   • Organise relevant authority to lock, tag and secure outlet
3. Carry out housekeeping
   • Clear and reinstate work area to ensure safe and clean work environment
   • Keep drainage system free of waste contamination when not in use to prevent contamination of waste water to sewer
   • Check drainage system regularly to ensure it is free from blockages, obstructions and leaks in accordance with company, regulatory and manufacturer requirements
4. Document waste water disposal
   • Document waste water disposal activities accurately and promptly in accordance with company requirements and relevant legislation

Gaining evidence to assess this unit

For valid and reliable assessment of this unit the competency should be demonstrated over a period of time and be observed by the assessor or assessment team working together to conduct the assessment The competency is to be demonstrated in a range of situations which may include customerworkplace interruptions and involvement in related activities normally experienced in the workplace

Evidence of competency is best obtained by observing activities in the field and reviewing the disposal of waste water to sewer If this is not practicable observations in realistic simulated environments may be substituted

Consistency in performance

Assessment requires that strategies meet the objectives of clients and comply with industry expectations in the particular client environment If the environment is narrowly defined or is not representative of industry needs it will be necessary to assess the unit within a variety of waste management environments or different client needs to assess competency in the disposal of waste water to sewer

Oral questioning or written assessment and hypothetical situations scenarios may be used to assess underpinning knowledge In assessment situations where the candidate is offered a preference between oral questioning and written audit questions are to be identical
